What is Sleep Apnea?
If you have any form of sleep apnea, your airway is closing off repetitively while you sleep. When your airway closes off you can’t breathe. This causes a cascade of events in your body that include a drop in your blood oxygen level, an increase in blood pressure, your heart slows down to conserve the rapidly decreasing oxygen until the brain detects that you are in grave danger and partially wakes you from your sleep so that you can resume breathing. As you wake your heart races, you over breathe, your blood pressure increases even further and you fall asleep again only to have this same sequence repeat. Sleep Apnea is a serious condition that has serious health effects. In fact, 80 % of people with Mild-moderate Sleep Apnea do not know they have it.
Consequences of untreated snoring / sleep apnea can include the following:
- Feeling tired or sleepy during the day
- Not waking refreshed
- High Blood Pressure
- High Cholesterol
- Neck pain
- Weight gain
- Heart attack
Treatment of Sleep Apnea
CPAP is the gold standard for people diagnosed with Severe Sleep Apnea, but for patients with mild/moderate Sleep Apnea or can’t tolerate a CPAP an adjustable oral appliance may be a successful alternative. Using the latest technologies we are able to create a professional custom appliance that optimizes the airway, creates a physiologic balanced jaw position, is titratable, takes up minimal tongue space and comfortable to wear. Treatment is then followed to assure that your sleep apnea is well managed and not getting worse.
